BHUBANESWAR: As police groped in the dark about Saturday's armed robbery in the house of retired Orissa high court judge P K Mohanty in Cuttack, chief minister Naveen Patnaik pulled up DGP Sanjeev Marik and commissioner of police R P Sharma here on Monday and directed them to crack the case immediately.
Naveen, who hardly intervened when common people became victims of serious crimes in the state, discussed the progress in investigation with the duo.
Chief secretary Gokul Pati and home secretary Asit Tripathy were also present.
"The chief minister directed us to arrest the culprits and revamp security in Cuttack. We are on the job," said Marik.
"The chief minister instructed us to intensify patrolling in CDA area, where many judges and retired judges live. According to the CM's direction, we will also replicate Bhubaneswar's CCTV surveillance system in Cuttack to keep tabs on anti-socials," said Sharma.
The dacoity, which left the police red-faced, evoked sharp criticism from different quarters. Not only Cuttack police, but also Bhubaneswar police is putting in efforts to crack the case. DCP (Bhubaneswar ) Satyabrata Bhoi has been frequenting Cuttack since the incident was reported.
A gang of masked goons entered the house of Justice Mohanty when his family was asleep in the early hours of Saturday.
The criminals tied Mohanty, his wife and daughter-in-law, assaulted them and decamped with valuable household articles and cash, worth over Rs 13 lakh. The incident sparked furore as Mohanty is the retired judge, who probes the alleged gang-rape and murder of a young girl at Pipili in 2011.
On Sunday, police conducted polygraph test on Mohanty's domestic help. So far, police have detained over 50 suspected criminals, who were released from Choudwar jail in the past few months, for interrogation.
"We have not yet got any substantial clue against the robbers. Our efforts are on. The case would be detected soon," said DCP (Cuttack) Sanjeev Arora.
