June 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - Udupi:

The reopening of schools or ‘Shala Prarambhotsava’ was celebrated in 609 government primary schools and 103 government high schools in Udupi district on Monday.

The entrances of these schools were decorated and rangolis were drawn near the gates.

Members of the School Development and Management Committees (SDMCs) distributed text books to the students on the occasion.

Diwaker Shetty, Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI), told The Hindu that payasa was served to the students during midday meals in all schools.

“There was over 90 per cent attendance in all schools in the district. The teachers also began teaching their subjects from today itself,” he said.

School reopening day was supposed to be celebrated on Saturday, May 31, but was moved due to the gram panchayat elections.

“The main aim of the school reopening day is to make it a special and enlightening day for the students,” Mr. Shetty said.

At Government Composite High School at Volakadu here, Gita R. Shet, municipal councillor, inaugurated the day by lighting a lamp.

She also distributed free textbooks.
