NEW DELHI: A 15-year-old boy and his grandfather were mowed down by a speeding Toyota Fortuner near Ashoka Niketan traffic signal, Yojna Vihar crossing, on Monday morning. Rishab, a Class VII student of Amity International School, Vasundhara, was riding pillion on his grandfather’s scooter. While he died on the spot, Sulekh Chand Jain, 65, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.

Police have recovered a CCTV footage which showed that, at 10.40am, Sulekh crossed the signal before it turned red. In the meantime, the speeding SUV, with Uttar Pradesh registration number, jumped the traffic signal, lost control and rammed the scooter from behind. While Rishab, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown a few feet up into the air and landed on his head, Sulekh was crushed under the SUV.
The errant driver left the vehicle on road and fled. The passersby called up a PCR and they were rushed to Hedgewar Hospital.
“The duo had gone to a relative’s home for a function. They were returning when the incident happened,” Sunny, Rishabh’s maternal uncle, said.
Police have registered an FIR under Sections 279 (rash driving) and 304 A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC at Anand Vihar police station. Meanwhile, police said, “We have identified the owner of the car and teams have been formed to nab the driver. Raids are being conducted in parts of Ghaziabad and Noida,” a senior police officer said.
