HOPCOMS will soon open Supermarket-Type outlet in City

By B S Prabhurajan Mysuru, May 31(UNI) Horticultural Producers’ Co-operative Marketing and Processing Society (HOPCOMS), Mysuru, will soon open a supermarket-type outlet at Alanahalli near Lalitha Mahal Palace in the city. HOPCOMS president Boregowda said the modern outlet, modelled on the lines of its main outlet near the city bus stand, will provide farm-fresh fruits, vegetables and fresh juice to customers. Work on the outlet is nearing completion. It should be open in about two months, Mr Boregowda said. There is ample space for parking at the outlet, which is coming up on two acres of land. There will a procurement centre and fruit-ripening facility. HOPCOMS, Mysuru, which got out of the red a decade ago, is making profits. This helps pay bonus to the employees, Mr Boregowda said. With a view to help consumers who visit the outlets, HOPCOMS will soon erect electronic display boards with a price list of commodities at each of the 43 outlets in the city. Plans are also afoot to develop a website, where consumers can check and compare the price of commodities. Meanwhile, HOPCOMS Managing Director B C Anand said the society, which made a profit of Rs 4.3 lakh last month, is planning to introduce RTGS (Real-time Gross Settlement) facility for farmers who supply fruits and vegetables. ''At present, we are paying account payee cheques to the farmers. With RTGS, the society will credit the farmers’ dues directly to their bank accounts. We will only have to ensure that the banks in which the farmers have their accounts have the RTGS facility,'' Mr Anand said. ''Apart from developing a website, HOPCOMS is planning to introduce an interactive voice response system to facilitate consumers to know the prices of commodities over phone. We have a limited number of telephone lines, which we use to interact with farmers and consumers. We will have to ramp up our services, '' he said. HOPCOMS will be setting up two wine boutiques in the city. While one is expected to come up at its proposed outlet at Alanahalli near Lalitha Mahal Palace, the other one is proposed at Thonachikoppal. ''We have already written to the Excise Department and are expecting permission to be given soon,'' said Mr Boregowda. Karnataka State Wine Board Managing Director B Krishna said that there were a total of 239 wine boutiques in the State. The proposed wine boutiques to be set up by HOPCOMS will be the first in Mysuru district. As part of its wine policy, the government will give permission for setting-up wine boutiques to applicants having 200 sq. feet of area for a fee of Rs.1,000, he said. UNI BSP SV SB 1349
