Expecting a huge turn out of devotees for the Mahamaham festival at Kumbakonam next year, Southern Railway has decided to augment basic amenities at Kumbakonam and its adjoining stations.

It has decided to spend Rs. 10 crore to carry out a slew of works regarding improvement of facilities aimed at benefitting devotees visiting the temple town.

Works to be carried out have been finalised and plans were afoot to complete them well ahead of the celebrations, Divisional Railway Manager A.K. Agarwal told reporters here on Tuesday.

Highlighting some of the passenger-related measures taken by the Tiruchi Railway Division, he said platforms 1 and 2 at Thanjavur, platform at Tiruchi Fort besides platform 3 at Puducherry had been extended to accommodate 24 bogies.

The level of platforms had been raised at Swamimalai, Villianur and Vellur stations and provision of a subway connecting platforms 1, 2 and 3 had been made at Thanjavur.

Mr. Agarwal said more multi-colour coach indication boards would be provided at Tiruchi Fort, Srirangam, Ariyalur, Vriddhachalam, Puducherry, Chidambaram, Cuddalore, Thirupadripuliyur and Tiruvarur in the coming months.

These boards would help passengers in location of coaches thereby facilitating them in easy boarding of trains.
