Gang robs ex-Odisha HC judge’s home

The police officials said the burglars broke into the retired judge’s house in Sector 11 area of Cuttack around 3 am when the family members were sleeping.

“After breaking into the house, the burglars tied up Mohanty and his family members ordering them not to raise alarm. They asked the retired judge and others that they had come for valuables without any intention to harm. They left after an hour,” said MK Senapati, inspector-in-charge of the Markatnagar police station in Cuttack. The car that the burglars had looted was found at Rasulgarh square in Bhubaneswar.

Police said the burglars wore masks and spoke in Hindi, Bengali and Tamil among themselves. Police suspect them to be part of an inter-state dacoit gang.

Police DG Sanjiv Marik, who visited Cuttack on Saturday, said a manhunt has been launched to nab the dacoits.

Marik would review the security of the area later in the day. Local people said it was surprising why there were no police patrolling vans around though at least 4-5 other retired judges live next to the retired judge’s house.

After retiring from Odisha High Court in November 2011, Mohanty has been living in Sector 11 of Cuttack. He is currently heading the one-man inquiry commission into the gangrape and murder of a Dalit woman in Pipili block of Puri.
