UNMOGIP fulfilling its mandate

UNITED NATIONS  - The United Nations Military Observers Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) is fulfilling its role in the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir under "difficult circumstances", a top UN official said on Friday.
"It is indeed one of our more discreet operations," Herve Ladsous, Under-Secretary-General for peacekeeping operations, told a Press conference at UN Headquarters in New York.
He was replying to a question about the activities of UNMOGIP, which monitors the Line of Control in Kashmir, as very little information is made available about the operation.
Ladsous said he was the first UN official of the rank of Under-Secretary-General to visit UNMOGIP personnel last year.
"Our colleagues there deserve our support as it is not an easy condition so high up in the mountains,"  he added.
"As you know it was a mission established by the (UN) General Assembly so it gathers little may be less attention," Ladsous said.
The group was established in 1949 to monitor the ceasefire line in Kashmir. It is composed of 42 military observers and 23 international civilian personnel.
