DMK leader M. Karunanidhi on Friday said the outcome of the by-poll to the R.K. Nagar constituency would hardly have any bearing on the ruling party or on the Opposition as it was a temporary arrangement to keep the Chief Minister in chair.
“There is a difference between by-polls in the past and the by-poll to the R.K Nagar constituency. It is a short-gap arrangement,” he told reporters after social activist ‘Traffic’ Ramswamy called on him to seek the DMK’s support for his candidature.
To a question, Mr Karunanidhi said he welcomed Mr Ramaswamy’s decision to contest in the by-polls to oppose the irregularities of the Election Commission.
He said he was not surprised by the laying of roads and distribution of tokens for various welfare schemes even after model code of conduct came into force.
“When AIADMK is in power one need not be surprised about these things,” he said, adding that the DMK government never expected the Election Commission to work in its favour.
He said most of the political parties have taken a unanimous decision on the by-poll and it was the wish of everyone that they should have better coordination among them in the Assembly elections next year.
