Bucs haven't forgotten second-year linemen

TAMPA, Fla. -- You may have forgotten about Kevin Pamphile and Kadeem Edwards. But the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have not.

After coming to the team in last year’s draft, the two offensive linemen barely got on the field as rookies. That’s why it was more than a little surprising to see Pamphile and Edwards working with the first team in Thursday’s OTA (organized team activity). Pamphile lined up at left tackle while Edwards was at right guard.

“First off, being here their second year and they are next up on the depth chart to get an opportunity, so that is a part of it,’’ coach Lovie Smith said. “We’ve seen things we liked from them, way back. That’s the reason why we drafted them. We thought it would take a while, they would take some developing, which is happening. Opportunity for them. Both are talented players and we are expecting big things from both of them.”

But Pamphile and Edwards are going to have to play really well if they’re going to earn starting jobs. That’s because the Bucs used a pair of second-round draft choices this year on linemen Donovan Smith and Ali Marpet.

That competition should be a healthy thing for an offensive line that struggled last season. The Bucs allowed 52 sacks and weren’t able to consistently run the ball.

“I think all of us would say we are better on the offensive line now, so [we are] a lot more confident in what we are going to do and what we are going to be,’’ Smith said. “We have a legitimate competition going into training camp. Maybe we don’t know exactly who is going to end up on the roster, maybe the starting lineup, exactly who it will be. That’s always good. All we’re trying to get right now is competition and let the cream come to the top. We feel very good about quite a few players on that offensive line.”
