Orphan Priyanka tops among rehab centre inmates in Mysuru
Mysuru: Priyanka M, suffered a heartbreak, when her mother suddenly stopped visiting her at a rehab home where she was enrolled.
Her parents were homeless and spent their lives doing menial jobs to eke out a living on the streets of Mysuru. Priyanka grew up playing on the streets until activists of Rural Literacy and Health Programme, an NGO working for education and welfare of slum and street children, encounter her during regular inspection in north east of Mysuru.
She was then rescued and relocated to their rehab home where she was provided education.
The NGO has been supporting her for education since class 1 and their efforts seems to have paid off as Priyanka has scored 80% marks in the recent SSLC exam. She appears to be a topper among inmates of all rehab homes in Mysuru who wrote the exam this year.
Priyanka showed interest in studies right from begging but when she was in class four, both her parents stopped visiting her. Till today she is unaware of their whereabouts. This sadness has etched in her heart forever but it didn’t put off her focus on education.
Priyanka who has scored 111 in Kannada, 85 in mathematics and 82 in English wants to pursue computer science education.
Other orphan girls Priya A has scored 441 and Deviramma, 396. Even these two girls have battled many odds in life to come up to this level. Priya wants to become a Hindi teacher.
Of the five boys who took SSLC exam four – Praveen, Avinash, Suresha and Mahadeva, all inmates of RLHP have cleared it.
