Kuvadva Road police said the assailants hit Rana and Leela with sharp-edged weapons and wooden clubs and then ran away.
The injured couple was rushed to Civil Hospital in Rajkot where Rana, a farmer, died at 2 pm while undergoing treatment. Leela was also receiving treatment but police said her condition was out of danger as of now.
“Mesavada and Gadhka villages are located near each other. Some 45 days ago, Khimji’s daughter Manisha had eloped with Rana’s son Jaysukh. This had angered Khimji. However, Manisha and Jaysukh are adults and had left home out of their free will,” Kuvadava Road police inspector Sarman Varu said.
Based on a complaint filed by Leela, Kuvadva road police have booked Khmji and five others for murder and rioting. The Police inspector said that the accused were on the run.
