Ross Lyon happy for Fremantle coaches to interview for Carlton job

Ross Lyon is fully supportive of his assistant coaches throwing their hats in the ring for the vacant job at Carlton - as long as it doesn't interfere with what they are trying to achieve in 2015.

So if the Blues are keen on one of his deputies at Fremantle, they may need to wait until October - after Grand Final day - before making any overtures.

Dockers assistant Peter Sumich has been linked to numerous jobs over the journey and will have his name pop up as a replacement for sacked Blues coach Mick Malthouse at some stage over the next few months - whether he wants to apply or not.

There seems to be a big gap between the roles the former West Coast sharpshooter has actually applied for and those he has been reported to have interviewed for.

Former Sydney midfielder Brett Kirk, plus other Dockers assistants Michael Prior, Simon Lloyd and Mark Stone also have impressive resumes because of consistent success at the WA port club - just as Hawthorn and Sydney Swans assistant coaches have been top of lists in recent years, with Adam Simpson and Luke Beveridge the most recent to land senior roles (at West Coast and the Western Bulldogs) after working with Alastair Clarkson at the Hawks.

Brendon Bolton, who stood in for an ill Clarkson for five games last season, is already on the list of those expected to be considered for the Blues job.

Likewise, Swans' Stuart Dew is highly regarded for the work he has done under John Longmire.

Fremantle coach Ross Lyon said that the club promotes the development of everyone within it.

"It's not something we have discussed with them, but as an organisation we want to grow, whether you are head of commercial operations, no matter what division you are in, we want people to grow and develop their careers and lives," Lyon said.

"So if there is an opportunity or a station that is a step up from the one they are in and it presents, we are really supportive of that.

"Obviously in coaching, it's in the context of our season and our mission that you don't get in the way of that."
