: Complaints of “discrepancies” in the II Pre-University (PU) exam results, which sparked off widespread protests by students, student organisations and political parties, have earned Sushama Godbole, Director, Department of Pre-University Education, the wrath of the Department of Primary and Secondary Education. A show-cause notice was issued to her by Rajkumar Khatri, Principal Secretary, Department of Primary and Secondary Education, on May 22.

A senior official in the department said the notice stated that the concerns of the public and the queries of the press were not addressed and sought an explanation from the Director for failing to address the problems. The department has asked for a response in a week’s time.

Sources said the reply to the show-cause notice would help understand if there were violations and also help in conducting a detailed probe ordered by Minister of State for Primary and Secondary Education Kimmane Ratnakar.

Among the problems that the students reported were of being marked absent even if they appeared for the exam; being marked on language papers that they have not studied or attempted an exam on; different websites displaying different marks; and scoring single-digit marks in some subjects while having done exceedingly well in others.

The discrepancies in the results had also led to the postponement of the announcement of the results of the Common Entrance Test and the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka’s Undergraduate Entrance Test.

When contacted, Ms. Godbole said she was not aware of any such notice.
