A Delhi Police head constable was assaulted by a group of men after he caught one of them stealing his mobile phone red-handed while travelling on a bus in North Delhi on Tuesday.
According to the police, four men pelted stones at the head constable and his friend, who was travelling with him, even as the alleged thief attempted to attack him with a knife.
The police official was, however, able to reclaim his phone at the conclusion of the melee and was discharged from hospital after being administered first aid.
“Head constable Sachin boarded a DTC bus at Netaj Subhash Place and was en route Kingsway Camp when the incident occurred around 9:25 a.m.,” said a senior police officer.
A permanent resident of Haryana’s Jhajjar district, Sachin realised his Samsung mobile phone was missing as he was readying to get off at a bus stop in Model Town.
As a reaction, Sachin said in his statement, he turned around immediately and found a 25-year-old man switching off his phone and keeping it in his pocket.
“I snatched my phone from him upon which he pulled out a knife and tried to attack me in a bid to take the phone back,” Sachin said in his statement.
A scuffle ensued and soon caught the attention of his friend and fellow commuter, Deepak, who was seated not very far.
But as soon as Deepak jumped to Sachin’s aid, three other men on the bus rushed to the alleged thief’s rescue.
The accused gang is then alleged to have assaulted Sachin and Deepak before they managed to jump off the running bus near Azadpur. The driver brought the bus to a halt giving Sachin and Deepak an opportunity to chase the gang, only to allow the latter an opportunity to attack them with stones and sticks as they fled.
“We received intimation about the incident following which Sachin and Deepak were taken to a hospital. A case has been registered at the Model Town police station based on Sachin’s statement and investigation is under way,” the officer said.
