Robertson had opened up a 3-1 advantage over Poomjaeng with runs of 33, 43 and 63, but a three-frame winning streak saw Poomjaeng into a 4-3 advantage.
However, the Australia's 2010 world champion rallied to level matters with a 74 in frame eight only for the world number 38 managed to take the deciding frame 69-64 with Robertson missing a black ball in the final frame to secure victory.
Home favourite and world number four Ding Junhui was never in danger of going the same way as Robertson as breaks of 55, 51, 66, 41, 68 and 50 saw the former Masters and UK champion complete a 5-1 win over Scotland's Marcus Campbell, whose highest knock of 53 in the fourth frame helped him stave off a whitewash.
Elsewhere, Barry Hawkins beat Gerard Greene 5-2 but Ali Carter suffered a surprise 5-4 loss to Kurt Maflin.
Breaks of 80 and 81 saw Hawkins into a two-frame advantage, but Greene secured the next two to level matters up.
2013 World Championship finalist Hawkins then rattled off the next three frames courtesy of runs of 76, 47 and 124 to move into the second round.
"That was the best I've played for a while, which is a good sign," said Hawkins.
"Lately I've been losing early doors a lot so it's just nice to win a match. I haven't done that well in China in the past so it would be nice to have a run here and build some confidence ahead of the World Championship. It was exciting to go to the Olympic Stadium yesterday for the press conference and the players really appreciate the support we get here."
2008 and 2012 Crucible runner-up Carter had looked in control of his match at 4-2 and with his hand on the table in frame seven, but despite putting together a break of 66, 'the Captain' lost that frame 71-66.
Maflin won the next two - despite Carter being first to the table again in the deciding frame nine - to secure his spot in the last 32.
