India, Germany to enhance defence cooperation

New Delhi, May 27 (UNI) Visiting German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen has held wide ranging talks with her Indian counterpart Manohar Parrikar, with both sides discussing new areas of cooperation between their armed forces and supply of the state-of-the-art equipment. Dr Leyen is on a three-day official visit to India. "Both sides exchanged views on global & regional security scenario; supply of state-of-the-art equipment/technology," Sitanshu Kar, chief spokesperson of the Defence Ministry today said in a series of tweets, after the delegation level talks. "Cooperation between the Armed Forces & partnering of #Germany in #MakeInIndia in Defence Sector were discussed," he said. Earlier, Dr Leyen had visited Army's R&R Hospital in Delhi, where she had a look at most modern medical faclilities. Dr Leyen, who arrived here yesterday, started her official engagements by paying tribute at Amar Jawan Jyoti, India Gate before she was presented a tri-Services Guard of Honour at South Block, the headquarters of Defence Ministry. She will present her country's vision on 'India and Germany – a shared security' at an event, organised by the Observer Research Foundation here this afternoon and interact with representatives of the Indian political community, business leaders and journalists. German Chancellor Angela Merkel is scheduled to visit India for the next round of Inter-governmental Consultations chaired by the two heads of government in October. In the second leg of her visit, the German Defence Minister will go to Mumbai, where she will visit the Western Naval Command and hold talks with Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Vice-Admiral S P Singh Cheema.
