Shastri is the winner

Shastri is the winner
After talking to relevant people, BCCI decides to stick to coaches Bharat, Bangar, Sreedhar as well.

In the end, it is back to square one. Status quo, to be more precise. Ravi Shastri and his team of coaches will continue with the Indian team, for the time being. So when Team India will take off to Dhaka on June 7, assistant coach Sanjay Bangar, bowling coach Bharat Arun and fielding coach R Sreedhar, along with team director Shastri, should be on board.

The decision, it is learnt, was arrived at after a wide-ranging consultations by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials. This paper had previously reported that Anurag Thakur had picked the brains of MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli on the support staff. Now Mirror understands that stalwarts like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman too have been spoken to by the board secretary.

Confirmed a source who is in the know of the development. “The present arrangement will continue for the time being. So all those who were part of the team’s support staff during the World Cup, with the lone exception of Duncan Fletcher, will stay on.” None of the coaches have so far been informed about this decision but the board officials could soon be calling them to apprise of their job extension.

The exact period of their contract is not known but it is likely that all of them will be handed at least one-year extension. The BCCI officials understand that they cannot have series-byseries arrangements. Besides, someone like Shastri, who is otherwise busy with his media commitments, is unlikely take up a short term assignment.

The status quo means Sourav Ganguly, who has been speculated to take over reins of Indian team, will not immediately figure in the scheme of things. It could be because of a combination of factors. First, Ganguly is an office-bearer with Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), a position that could be in conflict with an India job. Second, he is the chief advisor to Jagmohan Dalmiya, the president of BCCI. Dalmiya, as reported by this paper already, is not too keen to release Ganguly for too long.

Sources reveal that the BCCI mandarins, however, are unlikely to stop their search for a chief coach who will come into the position left vacant by Fletcher.

It is likely that the candidate will be a big name that will suit the profile of the Indian team, someone like Ricky Ponting or Daniel Vettori. However, it must be mentioned here that there has been no concrete development in this regard so far.

MENAWHILE, PATEL QUITS

BCCI sources have revealed that physio Nitin Patel has resigned. Patel has cited family commitments as reasons for leaving the team. Although the board has not formally accepted his resignation, it is not worried about the vacancy. There are a few options before the board in the form of Yogesh Parmar and Evan Speechly, who could be roped in at a short notice. Patel, who has been with the Indian team since 2007, is also the pysio of the Mumbai Indians team.
