Titlagarh sizzles at 47.6° C

The western region of Odisha is reeling under intense heat wave conditions with the maximum temperature in the major towns soaring beyond above 45 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

Titlagarh, which is known as the hottest place in the State, topped the chart recording 47.6 degrees Celsius – season’s highest temperature.

According to the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, Western Odisha towns such as Bolangir, Sambalpur, Hirakud and Jharsuguda experienced maximum day time temperature of above 46 degree Celsius. Bhawanipatna, Angul and Sonepur followed with above 45 degree Celsius.

Coastal Odisha districts were slightly relieved with temperature hovering around 40 degree C during the day.

Normal life in western Odisha was completely thrown out of gear due to severe heat wave condition that had been prevailing for past four days. The Met department warned similar condition would be experienced during next couple of days. Roads wore deserted look while people remained inside their houses during the daytime.

Meanwhile, number of alleged sunstroke deaths sharply shot up from 43 on Monday to 67 on Tuesday. The Special Relief Commissioner’s office, however, put the confirmed sunstroke deaths at four. Of the 67 deaths, investigation in 11 cases was competed.
