BNP leader taken into custody
SHILLONG: Fifteen days after he was arrested for entering the country without valid documents, police finally took joint secretary general of Bangladesh National Party (BNP) Salahuddin Ahmed into custody on Tuesday after he was released from the hospital.
“Ahmed is being interrogated and we will produce him in court on Wednesday,” East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang told TOI.

Meghalaya DGP Rajiv Mehta said police would abide by the court order and act accordingly. There is speculation that Ahmed might be extradited to Bangladesh, where he faces charges of inciting violence.
Ahmed, against whom a red corner notice has been issued by the Dhaka unit of Interpol, has been booked under Section 14 of the Foreigners’ Act.
Ahmed, who was shifted to the super-specialty North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences at Mawdiangdiang from Shillong Civil Hospital on May 20, was undergoing treatment for heart, kidney and skin-related ailments. “He is doing well now,” said a doctor after he was released on Tuesday afternoon.
Ahmed, whose entry into India remains a mystery, was found loitering in the Golf Links area of Shillong on May 11. The Bangladeshi leader, his wife
Hasina, and some BNP functionaries who have been camping in Shillong claimed
he was abducted from Dhaka and was brought to India blindfolded.
He said he surrendered before police after realizing he was in Shillong. The leader, who was reported missing from Bangladesh since March 10, was unable to give coherent answers, leading police tothink he was mentally ill. He was taken to the Meghalaya Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences from where he was shifted to Shillong Civil Hospital.
