Chidambaram’s congratulatory message irks Elangovan faction

May 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - CHENNAI:

A congratulatory message to AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa from former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram seems to have rekindled a feud in the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC), with the faction led by EVKS Elangovan set to rake the issue up at the next executive committee meeting. On Monday, Mr. Chidambaram congratulated Ms. Jayalalithaa on becoming Chief Minister for the fifth time. This is being construed as a provocation by Mr. Elangovan’s supporters, who feel the gesture may dilute the party’s opposition to the AIADMK government.

The matter may figure in the executive committee meeting of the TNCC on June 3 in which national general secretary Mukhul Wasnik is set to participate. However, dismissing this as a non-issue, former Member of Parliament K.S. Alagiri said Mr. Chidambaram’s remarks only reflected a healthy political culture. “When Narendra Modi became Prime Minister, our leader Sonia Gandhi congratulated him. Does that mean we condone the politics of the BJP? This is a non-issue,” he said.
