Expressing concern over the lethargic distribution of monthly allowance for differently abled people and delays in getting welfare assistances sanctioned, the differently abled persons staged an agitation here on Tuesday.

The differently abled people, affiliated to Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of All Types of Differently Abled and Caregivers (TARATDAC), also wanted the provisions in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme that enable the differently abled people to work for four hours and get full day’s wages, implemented in all blocks of the district.

“Presently, the benefits under the MGNREGS are reaching the differently abled people only in a very few blocks like Kundadam,” T. Jayapal, district secretary of TARATDAC, told The Hindu . Mr. Jayapal said that the monthly maintenance allowance of Rs. 1,000 was not coming regularly to many of the differently abled persons in the district. “There has been a frequent delay of up to four months in getting the amount,” he added.

The differently abled persons called upon the district administration to implement the Government Order issued four years ago that permits certification of visibly clear disabilities at the Primary Health Centres level itself.

“The enforcement of that order will help the physically challenged persons to avoid going for higher levels of tests to ascertain the level of disability,” they pointed out.
