‘Modi govt about self, selfies, selfishness’

The Congress on Tuesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “brazenly lying” to the nation as it aggressively countered his performance claims and launched a multi-media campaign to “expose” what it called the BJP’s “double-speak” and “failure” to implement the poll promises during its first year in office. It said the one year of Modi government has been all about “self, selfies and selfishness”.

The Congress fielded Ghulam Nabi Azad and Mallikarjun Kharge, its leaders in Parliament, to take on the BJP government, whose ministers went across the country on a media blitz. Azad countered point-by-point the claims made by the Prime Minister in his open letter to the people. The Congress also released a 42-page booklet titled “Ek saal, desh badhaal” and a 12-minute video documentary on the “double-speak” of the BJP.

The booklet dubs the Rafale fighter deal with France as “one of the biggest failures” of the ‘Make-in-India’ programme.

“So far I have been thinking that the BJP has two faces. Now we know they have many faces and it changes everyday,” Azad said. He said the Prime Minister’s open letter was “full of contradictions” and his claims were “far from truth”. Azad went on to allege that the Prime Minister’s claims were a “brazen lie.” He countered Modi’s claims that he had given a corruption-free government, saying 30 per cent of his ministers have criminal cases pending against them. Kharge, on his part, summed up the first year of BJP government as that of “fears, tears and no cheers”.

“Broken promises, boastful claims, shattered dreams, a nation betrayed… the one year of BJP government has been all about self, selfies and selfishness… The government has been reduced to an event management company. The Prime Minister has addressed a rally in Mathura, his ministers and MPs are busy addressing 200 rallies and holding 2000 exhibitions. Had this government performed, there would have been no need for all this. The work would have spoken,” Congress communication department head Randeep Surjewala said.

Festive offer

“The PM has claimed that the economy was rejuvenated, building on stable and policy-driven proactive governance. The reality is that in spite of having the good fortune of low crude oil prices, the NDA government has ruthlessly cut allocations for social sector programmes. It has also failed to do justice to the rural economy which serves 70 per cent of our population and has neglected the agrarian sector, which constitutes 15-17 per cent of the economy,” Azad said.

“Modi promised 10 crore jobs in five years. The October to December 2014 quarter registered a slowdown in job growth from 1.82 lakhs in April-June 2014 to 1.17 lakhs,” he added.
