Ranjani Iyengar always had a penchant for designs that appear simple but have layers of meaning to them. This passion blossomed when she designed her own wedding card and received an overwhelming response. Accompanying the positive reviews were a few requests from friends to design their wedding cards, logos and more. She realised, then, there is a huge market for wedding cards and innovative designs, which encouraged her to set up ‘Pink Whistle Man’.

‘Pink Whistle Man’ is a graphic design studio that specialises in quirky and customised invitations for all occasions. She also customises wallpapers, gifts and stationery for corporates and start-ups. “I never thought I would be the fussy kind of a bride. It turns out I was wrong. I created my wedding invitation, signboards, menu boards and other wedding stationery. My invitation turned out to be more of a business card. Slowly, but steadily, orders started pouring in from family and friends, asking for customised designs for birthdays, weddings, baby showers, engagements, books and scrap books, magazine ads and more,” says Ranjani.

Her designs are unique, innovative and fresh, and she isn’t afraid to twist them up with a pun here and there. She undertakes everything, right from the conceptualisation and creation to completion of the finished product and shipping.

The name ‘Pink Whistle Man’ is a tribute to Ranjani’s favourite character while growing up. “Mr Pink Whistle, a colourful and delightful little magical creature, brought in an element of surprise and excitement to each expedition he set out on. We hope that with our designs, we can weave a little bit of his magic into every event. Our main focus is to give a fourth or fifth dimension to every design, to pick up simple things from everyday life and make them interesting,” she says.Ranjani has not undergone formal training in graphic designing.

“In my previous job as a marketing person, I was impatient to wait for the designers to give the creatives, so I slowly learnt the design software and started to experiment by myself. I was addicted to designing and used my spare time going through online tutorials,” she adds.

How does the venture function? “Write to us with your request and we’ll brainstorm with you to conceptualise an idea. Then we create something that’s tailor made for you!” she says.

She hopes to continue to churn out personalised designs that, when coupled with some fun and flavour, will capture people’s attention. She began the venture in Bengaluru and now it has grown leaps and bounds.

Ranjani has clients from across the country and also a few from Hong Kong, Brazil, Australia and the US. Her vision is to build a funky and clever brand that resonates with everyone.
