SRINAGAR : After chill during the past two days due to rain in plains and snow on upper heights, weather turned pleasant today in the Kashmir valley, where a fresh Western Disturbance (WD) is likely to hit on May 29.
Sun was playing hide and seek and intensity of the heat was low in the valley after moderate to heavy rain during the night, turning the weather pleasant when heat wave has claimed hundreds of lives in the country.
However, border town of Kargil on Srinagar-Leh national highway, closed due to landslides, today recorded lowest one degree minimum temperature in the region.
A Met department spokesman said light rain or thundershowers would occur at eastern parts of Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours.
He said weather will remain dry till May 28 but a fresh WD was likely to hit the region from May 29 onwards.
Kargil experienced light snowfall resulting in drop in the minimum temperature. Against 4.7 degrees recorded yesterday, it was 1 degree resulting in cold, he said.
However, there was improvement in the temperature at Leh where the minimum temperature was 5.8 degrees against 4 degrees yesterday. There were traces of rain during night, he said. The sky would be clear tomorrow and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 19 degrees and 5 degrees respectively at Leh.
After witnessing chilly weather conditions due to rain during the past two days, Sun came out from behind the clouds in the summer capital, Srinagar this morning. However, it was playing hide and seek and intensity of the heat was low, turning the weather pleasant.
The spokesperson said the minimum temperature at Srinagar was 10.4 degrees still two notches below normal after 8.7 mm rainfall during the night. The maximum temperature in the city remained below normal yesterday also. It was 17.6 degree, seven notches below normal in the city, he said.
The sky would be partly cloudy tomorrow and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 24 degree and 10 degree, still below normal. World famous ski resort of Gulmarg recorded 10 mm rainfall during the night and the minimum was recorded at 3.5 degree, 2.5 notches below normal. At Pahalgam, a health resort in south Kashmir, the minimum temperature was, however, a degree above normal despite 22.4mm rainfall till 0830 hrs.
Qazigund recorded 9.8 degree minimum temperature with Kokernag at 8.4 degree and Kupwara 8.5 degree, which was still one to two degree below normal. He said there will be no relief for the people in Jammu where the sky would remain mainly clear and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 40 degree and 25 degree respectively during the next 24 hours.
