Aadhaar number is voluntary for electors: CEO

National electoral roll purification and authentication programme is a process to enhance database
Chennai: Chief electoral officer (CEO) Sandeep Saxena on Monday announced that furnishing of Aadhaar number is voluntary for electors. No electoral service will be denied to any elector on the ground of non-furnishing of Aadhaar number.
Allaying fears on Aadhar being linked with the roll of voters, Saxena said no names will be deleted from existing electoral rolls and pointed out that national electoral roll purification and authentication programme (NERPAP) launched in March 2015 is a process to enhance the database and has nothing to do with voting rights, he told reporters.
The Aadhaar number of an elector will not be displayed nor reflected in the electoral roll or Electors Photo Identity Card nor on voters' slips or shown in digitised form on website for public scrutiny, the CEO said. He informed that the NERPAP in TN has been progressing as per schedule.
Four special camps were also conducted for this purpose to enable the electors to file their claims, if required, in form 6,7,8 and 8A. So far, 13.00 lakhs claims and objections have been received, which are being disposed of, he added.
A press statement from CEOs' office read that out of the 5.62 crore electors in Tamil Nadu, the data of 5.54 crore electors (98.72 per cent) have been collected till Sunday and the data entry of 4.97 crore electors (88.48 per cent) has been completed. Districts are now ready to start seeding of Aadhaar into electoral rolls.
Teachers to campaign for error free electoral rolls:
Teachers of Corporation schools are involved in door-to-door campaign work for the ongoing ‘error free electoral roll’ — National Electrol Roll Purification and Authentication Programme (NERPAP) carried out by the Chennai Corporation.
An official in the Corporation said, “Since the teachers are on summer holiday, the local body has planned to involve them in the work. The work of the teachers is to go door-to-door and collect people's Aadhaar Card numbers and phone numbers. The teachers are asked to submit the list to the concerned zonal office.” In order to reduce confusion and unnecessary burden on the teachers, called Booth Level Officers, they were only given a particular area to cover.
The area is divided equally among the teachers, so as to make everybody complete their work in 15 days, says the official, who adds that while some teachers have completed the work, some others who were assigned the work late are still involved in carrying it out.
The teachers are also involved in the weekend camps conducted by the local body in this connection and the schools are also kept opened for this purpose, the official adds.
