For several years during his childhood, Yash Sinha had problems with spellings and could not comprehend the meaning of lessons even if he read them repeatedly. It was only in class 5 that he was diagnosed with dyslexia after his teachers and mother noticed his poor writing speed.
But on Monday, the mood at Yash’s house was upbeat as he had scored 91.2 per cent in the class 12 CBSE exams, thus proving that a learning disability is no deterrent to obtaining top scores. A student of Delhi Public School (North), this lad gives all the credit to his teachers for their relentless support.
Although he had a tough time coping with reading and writing, Yash says that his family provided him strong support. “My mother always told me to keep fighting no matter what, and this inspired me to never look at dyslexia as a hurdle,” he said.
Even with accounts being his toughest subject, Yash scored a whopping 97. “My principal and teachers gave me constant attention and helped me through remedial classes. They urged me to think in the form of mind maps and use different techniques to overcome the learning disability.”
Yash, however, admits that there were times when he felt disheartened as his friends made quicker progress in studies. “Accepting a problem is the first step towards defeating it. It is important that the school and parents support the child rather than dismiss their problem as lack of effort,” he says.
Now, he plans to make it big in the field of animation.
