AAP alleges violations of RTE in Rajkot

Last year, Rajkot was allotted 500 seats under RTE and 450 students had got admission, said the AAP worker.

AAP-mainAam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers on Monday alleged that private schools which enrolled students from poor families of the city under the Right to Education (RTE) Act were demanding balance payment of fees while some had refused to take such children as of now.

AAP workers Kishan Posteria, Jatin Bhatt and A K Parmar held a press conference and played two audio clips of purported tele-conversations between parents and school administrators. In on of the clips, teacher of a private school is heard telling father of a student that he would have to pay Rs 5,000 balance fee after government pays Rs 10,000 to the school under RTE as the total fee of the school was Rs 15,000.

“Under the RTE, private schools cannot charge a single penny from students who get admission against the mandatory 25 per cent reserved seats for weaker sections of the society. But many schools are demanding balance payment after deducting Rs10,000 that state government pays to schools per child admitted under reservation quota,” Posteria said.

The AAP workers also alleged that the state government was not implementing the RTE act in totality. “The Act mandates 25 per cent seats be reserved for weaker sections. There are 542 private primary schools in Rajkot and they enrol average 60,000 students every year. At this rate, 15,000 seats should be available to weaker sections. But the state government has allocated only 1,500 seats for academic session 2015-16,” said Posteria.

Last year, Rajkot was allotted 500 seats under RTE and 450 students had got admission, said the AAP worker. “As many as 4,800 students have applied to district education officer (DEO) of Rajkot this year to seek admission in the reserved quota. But due to lack on sanction from the government, only 1,500 have got admissions though the mandatory quota works out at around 15,000 seats,” Posteria added.
