Commerce profits from exodus of science students to state board
NAGPUR: For the fourth year in a row, Commerce stream produced the top scorer for Nagpur city in CBSE Std XII board results. This unbeatable streak speaks volumes about quality Commerce stream faculty in city and also the influx of good students to this stream.
The results were completely dominated by Centre Point School (CPS) and BP Bhavans Vidya Mandir, as they moved in to stake claim at top spots across streams.

The highest scorers in city were Bhavan's (Civil Lines) Commerce stream classmates Dhruv Daga and Abhishree Kabra with 97.4% each. In a strange coincidence the second spot too witnessed a tie with, yet again, classmates from CPS (Katol Rd) Bharat Gurnani and Yamani Temurnikar, scoring 97% each.
Streamwise dissection of the results shows that Science performed better than Humanities with Arusha Kelkar topping the city with 97.04%. The second spot for Science stream was claimed by Bhavans (Srikrishna Nagar) with Sakshi Naukarkar scoring 96.6%. CPS (Katol Rd) then moves in to grab the third spot with Sudeepta Mukherjee’s 96.08%.
For Humanities, Bhavans Srikrishna Nagar branch secured the top spot with Aishwarya Kayande scoring 96.2%. CPS (Katol Road) is not too far behind and managed to claim the second spot with its student Shaad Mirza scoring 95%. The third spot was again claimed by Bhavans (Srikrishna Nagar) as their Anupriya Mishra cemented her place with 94.2%.
Girls seem to have an edge over boys in the in every board exam, in every part of the country but Nagpur is clearly different. Here for Std XII both the genders have been sharing the laurels for two years now.

In Maharashtra 14,608 students appeared for std X as per the data released by CBSE. Though there are no official statistics available for Nagpur, it is estimated that about 1,700 students appeared for the exam. Last year 1,650 students appeared from the city.
The dominance of Commerce in CBSE Std XII results continues to intrigue everyone, but one of the reasons does seem to be the exodus of science students to state board colleges. A principal of a CBSE school, said, “I have Std XI Science stream but even my top students don’t stay back. They all make a beeline for coaching classes who in turn usher them to state board junior colleges. So all the high scorers in science are anyway gone from the CBSE family. But it is quite the opposite with commerce and humanities.”
The Humanities stream’s performance in the city is steadily rising with colleges starting innovative courses. CPS (Katol Rd) and Bhavans (Srikrishna Nagar) have become the top destinations for Humanities, a trend which will be bolstered by the results these two schools are producing. Courses like creative writing are getting good response at CPS with enrolment trebling since its inception couple years ago.
