NASHIK: The city police on Sunday afternoon arrested two persons from the Panchavati area for allegedly carrying a country-made pistol.
The accused has been identified as Mangesh Verma, a resident of Walmik Nagar in Panchavati, and Kanhaiyya Lonkar of Niligiri Baug. The duo was arrested by unit III of the crime branch of the city police, which received information that Mangesh was carrying a pistol.

Subsequently, the police had placed their informants in the Walmik Nagar area. After the police received a tip-off that Mangesh had come to his residence, they raided his house and found that he was carrying the pistol himself.
Police said during interrogation, Mangesh stated that he had taken the pistol from Lonkar, who sells watermelons on the Gadage Maharaj Bridge in Panchavati. The duo was interrogated separately and both claimed that they had found the pistol.
However, the police said they were suspicious that the pistol was purchased from some other person and investigations are underway in the same direction.
There have been quite a few cases registered in the city this year under the Arms Act. In 2014, altogether 19 cases were registered wherein firearms were used for robbery, murders, attempt to murder and even in a rape case. Besides, there have cases of criminals using firearms to threaten citizens or simply keeping them in possession illegally.

Senior police officials said that such arms were mostly manufactured in some parts of Madhya Pradesh and they were making efforts to see that the arms were not carried freely anywhere in the city. Police also said they were keeping a check on the suspects living in the slum areas and streets.
