Rapid Reaction: Rangers 5, Yankees 2

NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees are now .500, and headed in the wrong direction.

The Texas Rangers completed a three-game sweep at Yankee Stadium on Sunday night, winning 5-2 in front of a nearly packed house in the Bronx. The Yankees have now lost six games in a row, and 10 of their past 11.

It was a disappointing end to the evening, which began with a pregame ceremony honoring former Yankees center fielder Bernie Williams, who had his No. 51 retired and his plaque in Monument Park unveiled.

The Yankees dropped to 22-22 -- in second place in the American League East, 1.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rangers improved to 21-23.

Early exits: A day after CC Sabathia lasted just 2 1/3 innings in a 15-4 loss, Chris Capuano also failed to give the Yankees length. Capuano went just 4 1/3 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits.

A Jose Pirela error in the first inning led to the Rangers' first run -- Shin-Soo Choo reached on the E-4, and Prince Fielder drove him home with a double. Pirela was playing second base in place of the struggling Stephen Drew, who was given a day off.

After the Yankees answered with two runs in the bottom of the first, the Rangers went right back in front in the top of the second, thanks to Adam Rosales' two-run homer. And they never relinquished the lead again.

After opening the season on the disabled list with a quadriceps strain, Capuano is now 0-2 with a 7.36 ERA in two starts -- he only lasted three innings in his first outing.

Reliever Justin Wilson gave up the other two runs in the seventh inning, on a triple by Delino DeShields, an RBI double by Choo and an RBI single by Fielder.

Offensively challenged: Brian McCann drove home the Yankees' two runs in the first inning with a single, following singles by Chase Headley and Alex Rodriguez.

The Yankees had only three more hits in the game -- singles by Garrett Jones in the fourth and seventh, and a single by Headley in the eighth. Jones played right field in place of Carlos Beltran, who sat with flu-like symptoms.

Yovani Gallardo, 3-6 with a 4.26 ERA entering the game, gave the Rangers six solid innings, and four relievers finished the job.

What's next: The Yankees welcome in the Royals, who won two of three against them last weekend in Kansas City. This three-game set begins with a Memorial Day matinee -- it'll be Nathan Eovaldi (3-1, 4.73) for the Yankees, opposed by fellow righty Jeremy Guthrie (4-2, 4.75), with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m. ET.
