Online scammer makes off with P250K worth of acrylic sheets from QC trader

(Updated 4:20 p.m., May 25) A businessman in Quezon City has lost some P250,000 worth of acrylic sheets to an online scammer who posed as a buyer.

In an interview with GMA News, the victim, who requested anonymity due to security reasons, on Friday said he received a call from the suspect for the purchase of 110 acrylic sheets worth P2,300 each.

After the initial phone conversation with the supposed buyer, who identified himself only as Mr. Lopez, they continued their negotiation online, the victim said.

"Karamihan kasi sa negotiation dito sa business namin, online talaga at wala pa namang nangloko," he said. "Kasi matitino naman kausap ang mga kliyente namin kahit online ang order."

Also, the victim said the order was finalized after the suspect sent him documents, such as purchase order online.

A female suspect arrived the next day on a closed van at the victim's shop in Baranagay Old Balara in Quezon City.

Since he was not around when the suspect arrived, the buyer spoke to the victim's wife, who was managing the shop at the time, the victim said.

The wife at first was unsure of the transaction, but eventually decided to give in after she was handed a check worth P250,000 for the purchases of acrylic sheets.

"Saturday iyon," the wife said. "Paano namin matse-check kung tatalbog ang tseke 'di ba? Magaling 'yung mga suspect eh, biro mo, ginawa ang transaction sa internet nong Friday."

The victim said it was only on Wednesday when they learned that they were defrauded.

The couple decided to check the ACLopez trading company in Laguna, but they were told that it did not make request to  purchase.

By Saturday, they then went to the Philippine National Police's Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit in Camp Karingal to report the incident and to request an artist sketch of the female suspect and driver of the van.

The unidentified female suspect is described as being around 48 to 58 years old, 5' to 5'1" in height, with short hair, a slim build, and fair skin. Cesar Apolinario

Meanwhile, the victims urged to public to be wary against online scammers.

"'Yung mga scammer 'di natin malalaman agad e. Minsan wala sa itsura talaga 'yan," he said.

The PNP, for its part, also warned the public — particularly businessmen who use the internet for transactions — to be wary against potential scammers. — with Amanda Fernandez/LBG/KG/BM, GMA News
