Lack of toilets

at rail station

The Railway authorities should provide more public toilets at the Kozhikode railway station. On a recent journey from Kannur to Kozhikode by Parasuram Express, I could not make my way to the toilet as the reserved compartment was crowded with passengers without reservation. On alighting in Kozhikode, I went to the northern end of the platforms 3 and 4 to use the pay- and-use toilet, but it was locked. The only one available was on platform 1 where there was a long queue.

The Railway authorities have provided more facilities at the Kozhikode station, with more number of restaurants. Escalators and elevators have also been installed. However, it would be beneficial for passengers if the authorities gave some thought to providing good numbers of basic amenities such as toilets.

Contaminated

water on trains

It is disquieting to note that highly contaminated water is being used at the railway station in Kannur and the tanks in the trains are also being filled with it.

The contaminated water is drawn from the nearby well, which is filled with toxic garbage. The water is brownish with traces of oil suspected to have seeped in from fuel tanks near the station.

Years ago, water for the Railways was drawn from the now abandoned Chettiarkulum, which had plentiful fresh water flow into it. The Railway authorities should look into the problem and take measures to supply fresh and safe water to the station as well as to the passengers on the trains.

ATMS in disrepair

Some time ago, the State Bank of India installed a twin ATM booth at Palloor, Mahe. This was a boon to the public here, as Palloor is a fast growing commercial hub of Mahe with more than 500 shops and establishments.

Gradually, only one ATM was found to be in working condition and people managed with it. Of late, even this ATM breaks down frequently. On an average, it works only for a week in a month. The general public and traders are inconvenienced as they have to go to Mahe town to use ATMs. The SBI authorities should ensure that the ATMs at Palloor function without any problem.

Students put to hardship

I am a Class 12 student at the government school in Koduvayur. About 20 students take private buses from Kollengode to reach the school. But we face hardships as there are very few buses that operate on the Kollengode-Koduvayur route. Often, these buses do not halt to pick up students. Some conductors are rude to students and even charge the full fare.Krishnakripa. K
