Residents of Sarvodaya Enclave held a candlelight protest on Sunday evening against the proposed engineering college by the Sri Aurobindo Education Society in the colony.
The residents said that a new engineering college in the congested South Delhi neighbourhood would overburden infrastructure by causing traffic congestion, reducing green cover, and becoming a social nightmare. The engineering college is proposed to be constructed on the site of Mirambika Free Progress School.
The protest comes after the students of the Mirambika school were evicted from the school premises without warning on April 14, and moved to makeshift spaces within the residential Ashram to make way for an engineering college.
Over 200 residents have signed petitions protesting the college, and have held several town hall meetings and written letters to the DOE, AICTE, and L-G office concerning the matter. As these steps have not produced any results, the residents are now planning to move forward with a legal case against the AICTE’s approval of the college.
“We will be intensifying our protest over the summer starting with candlelight march, as well as sitting on dharna outside the Ashram gate. If all other options fail, we will move court,” said Mukesh Sakhuja, a member of Sarvodaya Enclave Cooperative Housing Society.
