Xavi's swansong at the Nou Camp
As Xavi bid adieu to the Nou Camp, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi's battle for the Pichichi came to a head in the last round of games in the La Liga yesterday. When Xavi Hernandez joined Barcelona's La Masia training academy in 1991, nobody could have predicted that the 11-year old would go on to become the heartbeat of one of the greatest club sides in the history of football; that Barcelona side from 2008-11.
When Barcelona took to the field, Messi was already four goals behind Cristiano Ronaldo. This was when Barcelona, particularly Neymar, began feeding Messi the ball so the Argentinian could eclipse Ronaldo to the award.
Ultimately, their efforts were in vain, as Ronaldo scored a 21 minute hattrick, although he secured the award before the game.
