Browns MailBag Question of the Week: Run vs. pass

The Browns MailBag Question of the Week:

Not in my mind -- not very likely at all. As former Browns GM Ernie Accorsi has said, a team a can win a title without an elite quarterback, but it is an exception and it has to have something else ultra-special that carries it, like the Ravens' defense of 2000 and the Bears' D of 1985. The Browns' defense has a chance to be good, but I’m not sure it can be '85 Bears good. It’s a new era. Yes, running the ball remains important, but a team still needs a top quarterback. Last season, eight of the top 12 quarterbacks according to Total Quarterback Rating went to the playoffs -- as well as every one of the top five in QBR. When it comes to running the ball, six of the top 12 were on playoff teams, and four of the top six. That may not seem like a significant difference, but it is. There are games and times in games when a throw or drive is needed from the quarterback. New England was the 18th-best rushing offense last season, but it won the Super Bowl because its quarterback took charge of the game in the fourth quarter and delivered two touchdown drives.
