MANGALORE: Volunteers of Ramakrishna Mission plugged away at their mission to rid this coastal city of its filth with its Swachh Mangaluru for Swachh Bharath - cleanliness drive for the 17th consecutive Sunday at Valencia in Mangalore.
Satish Bhat, former principal, Canara College inaugurated the drive in the presence of Swami Jitakamanandaji, president of Ramakrishna Mission.
Ganesh Karnik, Ivan D’ Souza, MLCs, and other eminent persons were present.
Members of Yuva Brigade, students of Ramakrishna Mission Balakashrama and other devotees, volunteers and well-wishers of the Mission took an active part in the drive. Swami Jitakamanandaji and Brahmacharis cleaned the area in front of Fathima Retreat House. Members of Yuva Brigade under the leadership Ganesh Karnik cleaned the area around Valencia Circle. The zeal of the volunteers was appealing enough for the locals to lend their hand to this effort.
The bus shelter opposite Fathima Retreat House was in a dilapidated state and people had very difficult time in using this facility during rainy season due to rain water getting accumulated on its low floor. The volunteers cleaned the bus shelter, filled up the low lying floor with cement and put up a new board with the message on awareness of Clean India. The bus shelter near Valencia circle was also cleaned and was given a face lift after volunteers painted the shelter.
The volunteers repainted the direction sign boards which were illegible due to wear and tear over years for the benefit of the public. The footpath adjoining Roshani Nilaya was also repaired and holes were covered with cement slabs after clearing the garbage and dirt lying there. The volunteers also cleaned Valencia Circle and painted it. Volunteers distributed handbills on awareness among public in the locality. MRPL, principal patron sponsored this week’s initiative.
