SURAT: Families of two brain dead women have given a new lease of life to seven others by coming forward to donate the organs of the two patients. Through this move, the donor families believe that while losing one person from their family, they have brought happiness to no less than 30 people from seven different families. The
organ donation came about after persuasion by a city based NGO.
Manjulaben Thummar, 48, a housewife from Jejod village in Amreli was declared brain dead on Wednesday. Her son Sanjay and husband Dhiribhai took an instant decision to donate her kidneys and eyes after a bit of counseling.
The two kidneys have been donated to Urjita Ranjan, 17, a student from Muzaffarnagar in Bihar and Virmala Gajera, 54, a housewife from Ahmedabad. Her eyes would be given to a local beneficiary.
"I lost my mother but everyone in the family is glad that her organs are giving a new life to three persons and their entire family," said Sanjay.
In the second instance, the family of Shobhna Patel, 48, wife of a farm labourer Vinod from Bhagdawada village in Valsad donated her kidneys and liver she was declared brain dead on Saturday after she suffered a brain hemorrhage. One of her kidneys has been given to 11-year-old Bhargav Patel of Surat while the second has been donated to Vimla Kanani, 50, of the same city. The liver was donated to Rajesh Sharma, 40, of New Delhi.
In both the cases, the organs were collected and transplanted by the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC) at Ahmedabad.
