India owes its existence as a strong, united, secular, and democratic nation to the vision and hard work of Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, Minister for Cultural Affairs K.C. Joseph has said.
Inaugurating a seminar on democracy, secularism, and socialism in connection with the 125{+t}{+h}birth anniversary celebrations of Jawaharlal Nehru, organised by the Kerala State Jawahar Balabhavan, on Friday, the Minister said Nehru’s abiding commitment was to the unity of the nation. His birthday was an occasion to relive his ideals and to revive the national spirit he dreamt about, Mr. Joseph said.
K. Muraleedharan, MLA, said Nehru had disproved the then British Prime Minister Winston Churchill that India did not deserve independence as Indians were incapable of governing themselves.
Writer George Onakkur pointed out that the celebration would be incomplete without teaching children Nehru’s three dreams, that of democracy, secularism and socialism. Balabhavan principal S. Malini and executive committee member M. Santhosh Kumar also spoke.
