KOLKATA: A Trinamool councillor and another councillor’s husband allegedly thrashed a security guard of a government hospital in North 24-Parganas when one of them was stopped from entering the female ward after visiting hours on Saturday.
The guard had to be hospitalized with severe injuries. Though a complaint was lodged, no one is arrested yet.
The incident took place at Khardah Balaram State General Hospital where Khardah councillor Mousumi Pal, along with her husband Pranesh and some others relatives, went to visit a relative in the gynaecological ward.
As the visiting hour was over, the guard, Paresh Shiuli, said he could allow only one person inside. This triggered an altercation between Pranesh and Shiuli. “Going by the hospital rules, no one is allowed to enter the female ward after visiting hours. So, the guard allowed only Mousumi to visit the patient and that enraged her husband and others,” an official at the hospital said.
Pranesh later told another Trinamool councillor, Supriya Mukherjee, about the argument and they later stormed in the hospital to teach Shiuli a lesson. They reportedly beat him up till he collapsed. “I tried my best to convince them that I couldn’t allow so many people into the female ward after visiting hours. They did not listen to me and hit me mercilessly,” said Shiuli, who is being treated in the same hospital.
Brushing aside the allegation, Mukherjee said, “If people spread rumours, I can’t do anything about it.”
