Phivolcs asks priests: Preach about preparations for quake, too

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology is seeking the Catholic Church's help in getting people prepared against a potentially catastrophic quake stemming from the West Valley Fault Line.

PHIVOLCS head Renato Solidum Jr., in an interview on Church-run Radyo Veritas, said the goal is to have the public prepared instead of panicking.

"Ang aking request na sana lahat ng pari na naglilingkod sa simbahan, sana makiisa tungkol sa mga ganitong sakuna at gamitin ang pulpito para bigyan ng tamang edukasyon para sa paghahanda ang publiko," he said.

He said the Church can play a major role in disseminating information on disaster preparedness.

Church officials earlier said they are ready to help victims of such a quake should it occur.

On the other hand, Solidum urged the Catholic Church to have its structures checked to make sure they can withstand quakes. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
