Herve Bazile scored twice as Caen made it an unhappy end to the season for Evian, whose relegation from Ligue 1 was already confirmed before their 3-2 loss on Saturday.

Pascal Dupraz's men entered the clash with just pride to play for and they seemed set for an embarrassing exit from the top-flight following Bazile's second-half brace in-between Modou Sougou's own goal.

But Olivier Sorlin and Modou Sougou scored late on to add some respectability to the scoreline, with the win ensuring Caen finished their season in 13th.

They had an early chance when Julien Feret released Bazile on the right, but, after the Creteil born striker cut inside, his effort at goal was well-saved by Benjamin Leroy.

Evian responded almost immediately when Adrien Thomasson picked up on the left before opting to shoot which went close to catching out Remy Vercoutre, but the vigilant Caen stopper did well to keep the Dane's effort out.

Caen wasted a good chance when Bengali-Fode Koita's header was well kept out by Leroy, but, after pouncing on the rebound with the goal gaping, Emmanuel Immorou could only blaze over the bar.

Caen wasted another decent opportunity just before the interval when Koita played a decent one-two with Damien Da Silva, but, with plenty of options, his pass to Sloan Privat failed to find its target and the chance went begging.

The hosts finally found the mark with an hour played when Bazile converted from close range after meeting Emiliano Sala's delivery.

That goal proved a catalyst for the hosts and they added another two in a matter of minutes.

First Thomas Lemar's corner ended up in the Evian goal with the help of both Sougou and goalkeeper Leroy.

Then, Lemar was the provider again, this time playing in Bazile who raced through before lifting the ball over Leroy.

Evian managed to pull two late goals back as full-time approached. First, Sorlin went through on goal before slotting beyond Vercoutre.

Then Sougou met Gilles Sunu's dlivery from the left to send a pinpoint header beyond the Caen keeper, but it was too little too late as Caen ran out worthy winners.
