The Union government is not averse to amending laws that pose hurdles in holding bullock cart races and age-old festivals like Nagpanchami, Union Environment and Forests Minister Prakash Javadekar on Saturday said, adding that while allowing such events and practices, it would be ensured that measures are in place to prevent any harm to the animals.

“If age-old traditions of the country face hurdles because of the law, then we would try to amend them,” said Javadekar addressing party leaders who were in Kolhapur to attend the BJP conclave.

He was reiterating his earlier opinion that bullock cart races could be allowed if measures to prevent injury to the animals are in place. It had drawn criticism from animal activists.
