Unemployment rate: Lucknow tops list for men, Patna for women

New data from the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) reveals that the unemployment rate in major cities decreased between 2011-12 and 2009-10 with Lucknow recording the highest unemployment rate for men and Patna for women in 2011-12.

“Among class I cities, for males, unemployment rate in usual status (adjusted) was the highest for Lucknow (8.5 per cent) and for females it was the highest in Patna (34.6 per cent),” said the NSSO report on unemployment situation in towns and cities carried out between June 2011 and July 2012.

Significantly, the unemployment rate for men was 2.9 per cent and that for women was 4.3 per cent for class I cities, marking a decrease from 2009-10.

“For males, unemployment rates in usual status (adjusted) decreased for class 1 cities from 3.4 per cent in 2009-10 to 2.9 per cent in 2011-12 in class I cities … For females, compared to 2009-10 in 2011-12, the unemployment rate decreased for class I cities decreased from 5.6 per cent to 4.3 per cent,” said the report. Cities with a population of one million or more are termed as class I cities. Towns with population of 50,000 to less than one million are classified as class II and those with population less than 50,000 are classified as class III towns.

Among class I cities, Patna followed Lucknow with an unemployment rate at 8 per cent for men and Hyderabad was at third place with a rate of 5.9 per cent. For women, Kanpur had the second highest unemployment rate 22.7 per cent followed by Kalyan-Dombivili at 11 per cent in 2011-12.

In class II cities, the unemployment rate for men rose to 3.3 per cent in 2011-12 from 2.5 per cent in 2009-10 and remained the same in class III cities at 2.6 per cent. The unemployment rate for women remained the same at 6.3 per cent for Class II towns in 2011-12 and 2009-10 and decreased only marginally in Class III towns to 4.8 per cent in 2011-12 from 5.1 per cent in 2009-10.

Meanwhile, in terms of the worker population ratio (WPR), among the Class I cities, Nashik had the highest proportion (86.4 per cent) of employed males whereas Patna had the lowest proportion (57.5 per cent) of employed males.
