Playing in the final of the Ramesh Desai Memorial National Tennis Championship in Mumbai on Friday, Krishan Hooda and Nishant Dabas were also facing another hurdle. The 11-year-olds had never played with each other. Yet, the unseeded duo went on to claim their first U-12 national title with a 6-7(6), 6-2, 10-8 win over top seeded pair of Gaurav Kurva and Sandeep.
Both Hooda and Dabas are trainees at the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association in Sector 10. Last month Nishant Dabas had claimed the title with a win over Krishan Hooda in the final in the AITA-CLTA Championship Series held at CLTA. “It’s a tremendous achievement for them. It was for the first time that they were playing together as Hooda’s regular partner Naresh Badjugar was not available. And they have won the title with a shock win over the top seeded Kurva and Sandeep,” said Gajendra Singh, coaching director at CLTA Stadium.

He added, “The fact that they made a comeback after losing the opening set speaks about their determination. The conditions in Mumbai were tough and players had to give their best. The title win will give them a lot of confidence.”
Son of a farmer, Hooda shifted his base from Rohtak in Haryana to Chandigarh three years ago and was selected in the Chandigarh Academy for Rural Tennis programme of CLTA. He won his maiden singles title in the U-12 category in December last year when he defeated second seed Gaurav Kuvra in the final in the CLTA AITA Super Series held in Chandigarh. The youngster then followed this with a gold medal in the team event in the National School Games held in January early this year.
Nishant Dabas, who belongs to Delhi, often trains at CLTA residential programme and won the doubles titles as well as singles title in the CLTA AITA championship series last month.
“When Krishan first came to CLTA, he had only heard about tennis and his family wanted him to be an athlete. He showed his eagerness and all the coaches have been impressed by his dedication. Nishant trains with us during vacation and he has shown a lot of improvement. Both of them are young and playing more on the circuit will boost their morale,” shared Gajendra.
