Ireland glows on Twitter Trendsmap half hour before voting booths closed

It appears many people took to Twitter in the half hour before polling closed at 10pm in a final bid to get people to cast their vote.

The trendsmap shows Ireland literally alight with activity.

A flurry of hashtags appear across the country in the second map - #hometovote, #marref, #pollingboothpickuplines and #VoteYes are just some of the popular tags.

Activity in Ireland put us on a par with the east coast of the US when it came to Twitter.

Our 'glow' in the final half hour of voting engulfed the UK, and appeared to hit parts of France, Germany and Belgium too.

It's expected a similar picture will emerge again tomorrow when counting begins.

Counting is due to begin before 9am.

Analysts had put the result emerging at 5pm - whether the high voter turnout might delay this remains to be seen.
