SIT to track ‘hidden players’ in Dharamshala ‘sexual assault’ story

Investigations, according to the police, have revealed that the two girls were not related.

DGP Kumar said: “We are not going to wind up the SIT, it will have a role to investigate the sequence of events, especially how the girl went to the college principal and claimed gangrape. She also named the alleged victim.”

The police at Dharamshala could trace the complainant only on May 21 near the police lines.

She has reportedly given contradictory statements before the judicial magistrate. She, it is learnt, told the court that she never realised that her statement will create such a sensation in the media.

Meanwhile, the SIT, said police officials, was zeroing in on half a dozen persons who could have sent the girl to the college principal.

The social media posts, which started pouring in soon after she went to the college principal, later took names of three individuals, including a relative of Urban Development minister Sudhir Sharma, for the alleged gangrape.

“What is surprising is that social media users also revealed the girl’s identity and claimed she had been moved out of the state to hush up the matter,” said a senior police officer at Dharamshala.

The girl’s parents, who were summoned by the police, were seen scolding her for behaving in an “irresponsible manner”.

“I want a thorough probe. The incident exposes how social media can create a turmoil and lead to a law and situation without any basis. It was a well-planned attempt to defame me. We will soon forward some names to the police for investigations,” said Sharma whose supporters have submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, Kangra, and demanded criminal action against social media users.

“Right now, we have given five names. There could be more,” said Sharma.

Meanwhile, the complainant and her husband were taken into protective custody of the police.
