Tesco pleaded guilty to giving false information on packs of peanuts

Tesco has been fined £21,000 for displaying the wrong weight details on packets of peanuts in Welsh stores.

Magistrates in Newport heard packs of Walkers Sensations peanuts had become smaller but were incorrectly labelled at stores in Torfaen and Blaenau Gwent.

The descriptions were found by Torfaen council's trading standards officers after a customer complained.

Tesco admitted breaching the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008.

The incorrect labels were displayed in the run up to Christmas 2014.

Matthew Bartlett, the council's senior trading standards officer, said the team would "challenge stores to rectify their mistakes".

As well as the fine, Tesco was also ordered to pay a £500 victim surcharge. Torfaen council was awarded its full court costs of £5,149.
