Music Review: Dil Dhadakne Do

Music: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy
Label:
T series

Going by the promos, Dil Dhadakne Do follows the exploits of a dysfunctional Punjabi family when they are out on a cruise. So the composers Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy were saddled by a premise of making a soundtrack which not only incorporates the narrative but the setting of the film as well.

The OST’s first offering is the title track, sung by Farhan Akhtar and Priyanka Chopra. Percussion, guitar and the incorporation of heartbeat like sound, make this youthful song about letting the heart be a pleasant offering. Priyanka sounds better than Farhan, who, while being easy on the ear, doesn’t bring home the attitude required for the lyrics that scream about rebellion and setting your own pace, going your own way.

The next track, Pehli baar is a soft rock number, sung by enough teen spirit by Siddharth Mahadevan and Sukriti Kakkar to hook you into believing in first love and all that jazz. The percussion is a little too heavy though; one would have loved some more guitar work in the foreground as well.

If the main characters in the film have Mehra as the surname, be assured there would be a Punjabi song or two floating around. Gallan goodiyan is the mandatory bhangra number, sung by Shankar Mahadevan, Sukhwinder Singh, Yashita Sharma, Manish Kumar Tipu and Farhan Akhtar as well. Ironically, this desi number turns out to be the best song of the album. Its earthiness makes you connect to it instantly. It’s filmed on most the ensemble cast and the video has already become a hit.

It’s a no-brainer that a song called Girls like to swing will be picturised on Priyanka Chopra and Anushka Sharma and will be one of high points of the film. It’s a fast paced jazz number sung impeccably by Sunidhi Chauhan. The brass section and the drums and percussion make it a happening piece. By-the-bye, its opening reminds one of opening strains of O haseena zulfonwali from Teesri Manzil.

Phir bhi yeh zindagi is a sad number sung by Vishal Dadlani, Alyssa Mendonsa, Divya Kumar and Sapna Pathak. It speaks about unrequited love and the angst one deals in such situation. This sombre song offers a counterbalance to the rest of the bouncy tracks.

All-in-all, S-E-L has done a good job despite the hurdles. The songs are already popular on the internet and complement what’s touted to be the most happening film of the year. Happy listenings…
