Mathematical Sciences and Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute (S3RI)’s commitment to equality has been recognised by an Athena SWAN Bronze Award from the Equality Challenge Unit (ECU).

ECU works to further and support equality and diversity for staff and students in higher education institutions across the UK.

Its Athena SWAN Charter scheme is aimed at addressing equality in academia. In particular, it addresses the under-representation of women and high loss rate of women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM).

Originally established in 2005, Athena SWAN’s remit has recently been extended to include other diversity issues, such as race, religion and sexual orientation.

Dr Marika Taylor, who submitted the Athena SWAN application, said: “We are delighted to have achieved a Bronze Award and look forward to implementing our action plan.

“Athena SWAN has been shown to have considerable impact, both at an institutional level and for individuals, and we believe that Athena SWAN will improve the culture and practices in Mathematical Sciences and S3RI.”

Representatives from the departments will be formally presented with the award at a ceremony in London in June.

The University of Southampton itself has a Bronze Award, and other areas that have been recognised by Athena SWAN include Chemistry, Health Sciences and Physics.
