North West businesses named Export Champions

A number of North West businesses have been named Export Champions, an integral part of UK Trade & Investment's (UKTI) campaign to get more companies in the region exporting.

The initiative, which began in 2013, brings together a wide range of companies of all sizes and sectors, to offer encouragement and peer to peer support to fledgling exporters.

Among the new Export Champions is Liverpool-based Halewood International. The company has grown to become one of the UK's largest independent drinks manufacturers and distributors, with a turnover in excess of £270m and employing more than 1,000 staff worldwide.

The business was founded in 1978 by the late John Halewood and has a significant international portfolio, including a wide range of well-known brands including Crabbies Alcoholic Ginger Beer, Lambrini, Red Square Vodka, Lambs Navy Rum and Whitley Neil Gin.

"In the North West our Export Champions are an integral part of our strategy, which is why I am delighted to have persuaded even more firms to join us," said UKTI regional director Clive Drinkwater (pictured).

“We are very fortunate to have many outstanding exporting companies in the region, of all shapes and sizes and covering a wide range of products and services.

“As diverse as these companies are, they all have one thing in common - their positive attitude and pro-active approach to exploring overseas markets, which make them inspirational 'Export Champions' who will become a beacon to inspire non-exporters to get started and to encourage new exporters to do more."

He added: "In particular I would like to challenge each business to make this the year that they explore one more market. If every current exporter achieves this, we could increase the GDP in the North West by an estimated £2bn, giving a significant boost to the region."

Greater Manchester's new Export Champions are Seamark, ParkCloud, Grace Cole, EDM, Environmental Engineering, Vernacare and Ridia Consulting, while Burlington Stone, Hawkshead Relish and Clark Door are new in Cumbria.

In Cheshire, Cygnet Group, Delamere Dairy and Upskill People have joined the UKTI programme, with TISS, Scorpion Automotive, Chelsom, Chemical Innovations EP International and Tangerine Holdings making up Lancashire's new entrants.

Finally, six Merseyside companies are now Export Champions. They are Cataclean Global, Halewood International, Alex Stewart Agriculture, Alison Appleton, United Automation and ARUP.
